New insights into soil arching behaviour in column supported embankments

چکیده

The observation of failure surfaces within column supported embankments is critical to understanding how the embankment stresses are transferred towards heads. In this study, finite element simulations utilising a strain softening constitutive model, non-local regularisation and Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation used examine these over various geometries. This methodology offers insights into nature mechanism, development plane equal settlement influence subsoil profile. Depending on geometry, results indicate either punching failure, inverted general bearing or localised develops. transition between found be closely related establishment embankment. height range mechanisms that develop were largely insensitive profiles simulated. These findings have implications for practical design efficient effective future experimental studies.

Soil Arching Behind Retaining Walls under Active Translation Mode: Review and New Insights

Granular materials have a tendency to exhibit an arching effect by which the load is transferred from yielding parts to adjacent stationary parts. Retaining walls are among those structures that the soil arching plays an important role in the distribution of earth pressures. This paper briefly reviews the development of soil arching theory and its application to different geotechnical projects....

Bridge foundations supported by EPS geofoam embankments on soft soil

EPS geofoam can be used to support highway bridge structures without the aid of deep foundations. The development of this technology is important to accelerate construction on soft compressible soil. EPS geofoam allows for the rapid construction of bridge foundations on such soils without the time and cost involved in installing traditional foundations. Because EPS geofoam is an extremely light...

New insights into behaviour using mouse ENU mutagenesis

Identifying genes involved in behavioural disorders in man is a challenge as the cause is often multigenic and the phenotype is modulated by environmental cues. Mouse mutants are a valuable tool for identifying novel pathways underlying specific neurological phenotypes and exploring the influence both genetic and non-genetic factors. Many human variants causing behavioural disorders are not gen...

An Experimental Investigation into the Arching Effect in Fine Sand

In the current paper results of a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect in loose and dense sand are presented. The apparatus comprises concentric circular trapdoors with different diameters that can yield downward while stresses and deformations are recorded simultaneously. As the trapdoor starts to yield, the whole soil mass deforms elastically. However, afte...

New Insights into the Effect of Diabetes and Obesity in Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in elderly people. The prevalence of Alzheimer diseases is increasing in the world due to population aging. Metabolic disease such as diabetes and obesity play important role in Alzheimer disease. Hyperglycemia can play important role in brain damage. It causes cognitive impairments, functional and structural alterations in...
